What are the connections between the Transformers TV Series and the movie?

I looked up the comic series, but finding exact matches for my question have proven more difficult. So, to any hardcore Transformers fans, what is the connection/story plot for the original Transformers TV Series vs the movie?

There aren’t many connections other than
1) Optimus Prime
2) Megatron
3) Starscream
4) Space and planets
5) The beast wars robots
None….
there are two different contiutites. There are similarities though the ones that are the same in all comics
Autobot/Decepticons, home is Cybertron…Decepticons want power.
Apart from the depcition of Optimus Prime things are always different. There was no Allspark in G1 or anything
Not totally sure since I tuned out while the boys watched it when they were growing up.. BUT they are from another planet, there are good and bad ones, and they have special earth friends. That is all I can figure out. JUST LOVED the movie though and want to see new one.
The concept of cars turning into robots is cool.
